About the 99 names

The Quran says that Allah has the most beautiful names (Asma-ul-Husna) and invites people to call on Him by them (7:180). A hadith recorded by Tirmidhi lists ninety-nine of them, and that list is the one used here.

Many of the names appear in the Quran. Some, like Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem, appear in the Bismillah that opens almost every surah. Learning a name together with its meaning is a common way to get to know it.

Scholars have counted the names in different ways, and the numbering of a few names differs between lists. This page follows the widely used Tirmidhi order.
