About the Hijri calendar

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar of twelve months, each lasting 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year is about 354 days. Its count begins from the Hijra, the migration of the Prophet (ﷺ) from Makkah to Madinah, in 622 CE.

Because it is shorter than the solar year, Islamic months move earlier through the Gregorian seasons by about 11 days each year. Ramadan, for example, falls in a different season over the years.

This page uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, a calculated calendar. It is convenient for planning, but the start of a month for worship is decided by moon sighting in many places.
