About zakat
Zakat is the obligatory yearly charity of Muslims who own wealth above a minimum threshold, and it is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is paid at 2.5% of the zakatable wealth.
The threshold is called the nisab. It is commonly set at 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Many scholars use the silver nisab because it is lower and so includes more people, while others use the gold nisab. You can choose either here.
Wealth is generally counted once it has been held for one lunar year. It includes cash, savings, gold and silver, business stock and money owed to you that you expect to receive. Debts you owe that are due are subtracted.
The Quran names eight categories who may receive zakat (9:60): the poor, the needy, those who collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the traveller in need.
Gold units
In Bangladesh and South Asia gold is sold by the bhori (vori). One bhori is 11.664 grams, so the gold nisab is about 7.5 bhori and the silver nisab about 52.5 bhori.
